Pornography: Driving the Demand for International Sex Trafficking

Pornography: Driving the Demand for International Sex Trafficking” will begin on the evening of Sunday, March 13 and continue through Tuesday, March 15, at the Hilton Garden Inn in downtown Chicago. The conference is the second in the Demand Dynamics series, which aims to promote public discussion and provide media education regarding the issue of demand in international sex trafficking. The purpose of this conference is to share information about the connections among trafficking, pornography and demand and to develop a toolkit to empower activists working to address pornography's role in creating demand for sex trafficking.

The conference speakers will address pornography, demand and sex trafficking from a feminist perspective.  Our keynote speaker is Catharine A. MacKinnon, Professor of Law at the University of Michigan. Also speaking is Dr. Esohe Aghatise, Founder and Director of Association Iroko Onlus in Turin, Italy, which assists Nigerian trafficking victims and others. Ms. Julie Bindel, a noted journalist for The Guardian in the UK who writes on sexual exploitation issues, will also speak. For other speakers and topics, please refer to the draft program agenda.

As of February 1, we opened the conference to activists and others who did not attend our 2003 Demand Dynamics conference. Seating is limited. To request a space or be wait-listed for the conference, please contact us at demanddynamics@earthlink.net.

Whether you will be with us or awaiting the conference outcome, we urge you to consider pornography's impact on the trafficking of women and children and contact us with suggestions for creating a plan of action that will help activists begin addressing this urgent issue.
